Drone Pioneer: Annalisa Russell-Smith’s Sky-High Achievements

Annalisa Russell-Smith is an accomplished aerospace professional who has made significant strides in the world of drone technology. From her early days in filmmaking to becoming a leading figure in beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations and defense projects, her journey is marked by innovation, problem-solving, and a passion for aviation.

From Filmmaker to Drone Innovator

Annalisa’s initial foray into drone technology stemmed from her work in the media industry in the USA. Recognizing the potential of drones to capture unique aerial perspectives, she integrated them into her filmmaking business. “The early days of my film-making and storytelling business presented a few problems I thought I could solve using drones to fly a camera instead of just carrying one around,” she explains. She found that drones allowed her to achieve smooth camera movements without the need for heavy equipment.

Driven by her interest in aviation and technology, Annalisa obtained her drone pilot qualifications in the UK. She trained with Flyby Technology and became the first civilian female BVLOS pilot. This achievement marked a significant step in her career, opening doors to new possibilities in the field of drone operations.

Breaking Barriers: First Civilian Female BVLOS Pilot

Annalisa’s qualification as the first civilian female BVLOS pilot in the UK was a groundbreaking achievement. BVLOS flights involve operating drones beyond the pilot’s visual range, enabling a wider range of applications such as surveying, inspections, and deliveries. This requires advanced training, sophisticated technology, and adherence to strict safety regulations.

Her interest in aviation started early on, as her grandfather, Allan Russell-Smith, was a World War I fighter pilot. Despite not being allowed to become a fighter pilot herself, due to being a girl, Annalisa never gave up on her dreams of flying.

COVID-19 Response: Delivering Chemotherapy with Drones

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Annalisa played a crucial role in a project that used drones to transport chemotherapy supplies to hospitals. Working with Apian and the National Health Service (NHS), she helped establish a BVLOS drone delivery service between Thorney Island and the Isle of Wight. This initiative overcame logistical challenges and ensured timely delivery of essential medication to patients.

“We wrote the first operational safety case for complex urban flight, over water that was accepted by the CAA [Civil Aviation Authority],” Russell-Smith notes. This involved creating a temporary danger area and flight corridor, as well as establishing best practices for operations.

Leading Defense Projects: The Jackal UAV

Annalisa’s expertise and leadership skills have led her to take on significant roles in defense projects. She is currently the Project Lead for The Jackal, an armed combat capability developed by Flyby Technology. This project involves using advanced drone technology for defense applications, showcasing the versatility and potential of drones in various sectors.

Annalisa did not imagine having the responsibilities she now holds, and with the bonus of saving lives, she loves technology.

Championing Women in Aviation

As a female leader in the drone industry, Annalisa is an advocate for greater diversity and inclusion. She recognizes the importance of encouraging more women to pursue careers in aviation and technology. By sharing her experiences and inspiring others, she hopes to break down barriers and create opportunities for women in these fields.

“Drones will have a positive impact on millions of lives and the way they can be used will be limited only by our imagination,” Annalisa states. “I could soon be flying drones remotely anywhere in the world from the UK and that’s incredibly exciting.”

A Storyteller at Heart

Beyond her technical expertise, Annalisa is a passionate storyteller. She uses her filmmaking skills to document the work of Flyby Technology and highlight the positive impact of drones on society. Her relaxed and informal interviewing style allows her to connect with people and share their stories in a compelling way.

Annalisa is available for assignments anywhere in the world.
